Diving medicine is one of the youngest specialisms within the field of medicine. Although you could read reports about diving-accidents in the 17th and 18th century, in the second half of the 19th century diving-accidents were systematic investigated. Reason for this was, that in this time, tunneling/caissonwork became very popular. The work of Triger, Bert, Moir, Heller, Haldane, Hill and Lorraine Smith resulted into a dramatic drop in fatal diving/caisson-accidents. After that researchers like Behnke, Hahn, Hempleman and Workman broaden the dive medical knowledge to what it is today and made diving a save sport if you respect the rules which are developed in the last 150 years.
